I was surprised and very happy to see the plaque in the school commemorating my cousin Michael. He was the last of my fathers family to live in Ballintotis. I have happy memories of visiting family there and climbing the castle.
Best wishes to you all.

I just want to say how proud I am of my niece Lisa Cooney for her brilliant photo of CJ and the racquets. To have it win the overall photo in Wimbledon was just fantastic. Her prize was just the best ever. A dream come true of Centre Court for the men's singles match and especially this year with Andy Murray playing and winning it. I believe they had a great time and I think she should be getting on her thinking cap for next year's photo.

Out here in Perth earning my living, thrilled to see the millenium picture of my two deceased friends great Canon Bertie and Dick (may they rest in peace). Only Ed and myself left to tell the story. How life changes for us all and time flies. Very proud to have been associated with Ballintotis Church. Well done to you all as a community. Cheers!

Paudie Foley

my son and I ran the race last night,  I was asked to run it with him when we registered, which was a great experience. I have attended many road races but none so far could compare to the atmosphere that I experienced last night,  it seemed truly a community effort.  The route is lovely and we are looking forward to next year already.
Many thanks,

Just to say a big thank you for organizing the race last night. I am only just starting running and last night was only my third time doing a road race, so this was all new to me!. I was just reading the blog and it was wondering why the race was such a success- it was because of the fabulous atmosphere there last night and the brilliant welcome we received from the community- well done- the success of the event was well deserved!

Kind Regards

Catherine O Brien

There was a great buzz and a real community spirit in Ballintotis for this race. . importantly (as I always think of my stomach) there was a great spread with lots of home baked goodies afterwards ... race of the year so far!!!

Anon - Running in Cork, Ireland Blog

It was a fast course alright. However, being a not so serious runner this didn't bother me too much as there was varying level of fitness and plenty at my level. Well done to the organisers, it was a great race along with a wonderful atmosphere ... not to mention the welcome tea and sandwiches afterwards!. Well done to all concerned. Looking forward to next year.

Hi Jean and all in Ballintotis. My American cousins who visted the church last week and the others who visited last December were very impressed with the church and the lake. Their ancestors (and mine too) got married there on Valentine's Day 1882. It was a romantic setting for weddings even back then!

Hello there,
Just looking at your website and remembered many visits as a child and playing by the lake with Ann Duggan! I'm Elizabeth Rohan's daughter, and cousin to the Cooney's etc. We live in West London, my mum is still going strong and talks fondly of her days in Ballintotis. We live not far from Sister Maria Julia (Kathleen Rohan) and visit her regularly too. She's in great spirits. My sister Anne and I, send you all our best wishes.

Kathy Hawes

Dear Jean,

I am trying to discover if the “Bourkes of Ballintotis” as mentioned in the history of Ballintotis 1992 are part of my ancestors’ family.

Our family details are as follows.

Records indicate that William Bourke married Elizabeth Ahearn around 1800.

Their son James Bourke (1809-1900) married Elizabeth Terry (1837-1907) at St Colemans Catholic Church Cloyne on 18th April 1858.  Witnesses were John Terry and James Ahearne.

Their children were baptised at the Catholic Church in Killeagh.

William - 11 April 1859 sponsors John Terry and Catherine Ahearne.
Mary - 19 June 1860 sponsors John Bourke and Mary Bourke.
James - 12 October 1861 sponsors John Dorgan and Honoria Bourke.

James and Elizabeth Bourke and their children, James, Eliza and Master Bourke sailed fromLiverpool on the S.S. Great Britain arriving Melbourne, Australia on 4th April 1863.  There are now approximately 250 descendants of James and Elizabeth in Australia.

If there any Bourkes in the district that may be related, they can either email me at or correspond with me at 702 / 9 Eades Street, East Melbourne  Vic  3002  Australia.

Yours sincerely,
Gavan Bourke

Hello, this is Johnny Wishbone from the island of St.Troy and i am e-mailing you in relation to your website. I came across it when i typed in 'famous boglands in Europe' on the search engine Google, i'm not sure you'd be familiar with it it's a local run company. Anyway we would like to invite you and an ambassodar from your famous town. We are a small island off the coast of Jamaica and there is a flight from shannon to the island of St.Troy every two years and we would be delighted if you could make it within the next two decades if possible, where we will party and 'Shake your booty till the Wild Boars come home', yes!! May God be with you, and keep up the good work.

Your's Sincerely
Johnny Wishbone
