Ballintotis Gets A New Website Locals around Ballintotis were perplexed at first at the strange sight which appeared near the local church recently. Resembling an outsize spiders web on the hedgerow opposite the church, it soon became apparent that the locality had become home to thousands of caterpillars who had decided that, because of the abundant supply of their staple diet, the spindle plant in the hedgerow, it was an ideal place to set up home. The intricately spun web, which apparently serves as protection from predatory birds, takes over a thirty foot section of the hedgerow approx. with a few smaller webs nearby. The size, complexity and fine design qualities of the web are truly amazing, considering it was constructed with what must have been a huge team effort by so many tiny creatures, and has brought visitors from far and near to observe and photograph it. Ms. Marjorie Barry, the principal teacher at the local national school organised a talk at the site by former wildlife ranger, Mr. Pat Smiddy, which was attended by pupils from the school as well as other interested people from around East Cork. Mr. Smiddy's interesting talk, which was videoed and will appear on this site soon, covered the caterpillars as well as the birdlife around the lake.
