Last week's win over Inch NS guarnatees that whaever happens in the final group game, the locals will feature in the last four, so basically group honours that's at stake in the final fixture. Well doone to all concerned on their progress to date.

Fit4Life Club
The work of chairman Sean Leahy and the entire Fit4Life committee is once again in the spotlight as the local Ballintotis club continues to soar in popularity and is now one of the biggest and most popular in the county. From humble beginnings the club's name has now spread far and wide and with around 20 of it's members in advanced training for the Dublin City Marathon, further exposure is ensured on the streets of the capital. By all accounts the training is right on cue for the big day. But for the majority of the members with more modest ambitions the club offers just an enjoyable challenge to get fit and stay fit during the winter months. P.R.O Louise Casey has all the updated info on the Ballintotis Fit4Life facebook page.

Family FunDay
Ballintotis Parent’s Association wish to thank all those who supported last Sunday’s Family Funday. Proceeds from the day went towards the purchase of interactive whiteboards for the school. Last Sunday a large gathering assembled for the Annual Walk which took place along the new pathway for the first time. Afterwards there was plenty of activity in the Community Centre, with loads of attractive stalls and plenty of delicious food. A raffle with some fabulous prizes also raised a considerable amount of money for the casue.

Sciath Na Scol
The love affair between Ballintotis and the Sciath na Scol GAA competitions continued last week, when the school reached yet another hurling Final. This time a thrilling win over Inch saw the locals qualify to play Dungourney in the Final at Pairc Ui Rinn, which is scheduled to take place next week. There were stars aplenty as Ballintotis pulled out all the stops to secure a famous semi final win. Best of luck is extended to all the team in the Final.

This week, the sporting theme continues in the School – it’s “Active Week” so lots of fun and games are guaranteed throughout the week, with the emphasis very much on participation and enjoyment.

Youth Club
The Ballintotis/Castlemartyr Youth Club have enjoyed a great few months of activity with events taking place in Ballintotis Community Centre, Castlemartyr School Hall as well as visiting other venues.

This Friday the busy season will culminate with a special visit to the Quality Hotel, Red Barn from 6.30pm to 9pm. The evening will consist a team building boot camp, fun activities, gym activities, a swim in the pool and conclude with food being served before 9pm. All in all a great way to finish the season. A tough course not helped by the strong winds on the day

Síobhán O’Brien Is National Champion
More local joy to report in the shape of gymnastics and congratulations to Síiobhán O’Brien who won an All Ireland gold medal in Limerick just last week. Síiobhán had quite a busy few days as she also received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Tuesday Last.

Fit4Life Club
Members of the Ballintotis Fit4Life Club were due to visit Kilcredan this week for a trial run around the 5K route ahead of Friday’s Road Race. This has been a great occasion in the past two years and is well worthy of support. On Sunday, the Emer Casey Memorial 10K Race takes place in Youghal at 1.30pm. It’s a superbly organised event in aid of a great cause and again we urge club members to take part.

Last week Frazer McGilip had a superb run to win 3rd prize in his category in the Cheetah 4 Mile Race in Fota. Meantime local man Sylvie O’Mahony followed his wife Mary who was in the prizes in Clonpriest 5K, by producing a mighty run to win his category. Overall some great running by Ballintotis Club members in recent weeks, with loads of personal best times being recorded. No doubt many more will follow in the summer ahead.

Don’t forget next week the John Buckley Sports 5K takes place on Tuesday with the start of the Ballycotton Summer Series on Thursday in Ballyandreen.

GAA Fields
It’s championship time again on the local GAA fields with lots of locals donning the colours of either Midleton who began their campaign in the Senior Championship with a win over Killeagh on Sunday and also many more involved with Castlemartyr who begin life in the Intermediate Grade against Kildorrery on Sunday next in Rathcormac. – Best wishes to both clubs in the season ahead.

Great to see the local involvement in the red jersey as well as both Brian Lawton and Aidan Ryan are part of the Cork senior panel and Seadnaidh Smyth is looking forward to a rematch against Limerick in the Munster Minor Semi Final.

Road Race Committee Extend Thanks
The Ballintotis Road Race Committee wish to say a major word of thanks to all those who helped in any way in ensuring this year’s event was another huge success. In order to co-ordinate a venture of such size huge community involvement was necessary. Once more this year’s race attracted an all time record for a mid week fixture in the annals of running in Cork. The final figure of 1,175 finishers was 179 more than last year, as the 1,000 barrier was past for the first time ever.

Ballintotis Tuesday Club
On Tuesday next May 5th the Ballintotis Tuesday are having a different type of day at the Community Centre. They are meeting at 11.00am, (note time) a light lunch will be served and some music and a singsong after lunch. Maria Hamm from Cork Sport Partnership is coming to advise all present about exercise suitable for the over 50’s!!! Maria's approach is to make exercise fun and suitable for all present. Maria was a big hit leading the Fleet Feet walking programme which took place during the winter in the Community Centre. Participants had never had such a good time on an exercise programme and can't wait to start back again this coming September.

We are encouraging all members and anyone in the area who would like to hear what Maria has to say about exercise to come along and join in the fun for the day.

Trip to Clonakilty
Names will be taken on the 5th May for the Tuesday Club trip to Clonakilty on the 2nd of June.

Meantime, best of luck is extended to Conor Fitzgerald, Elena Kelleher, Andrew Kelly & Ellen Hayes Nally who have been called to try out for the Cork Primary Game Team Selection.

On Friday last, 3rd class boys participated in their first official outing representing Ballintotas NS. Ms Howick took the boys to Aghada where they joined in with many schools from the locality and played in a fun friendly hurling blitz. The boys did the school proud and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Roll on the Sciath na Scol for these group of boys!!!

The girls primary mini sevens, County Camoige playoff was played also last Friday in Carrigtwohill, having qualified for the County Section after winning their division in Castlematyr- beating the hosts, Kyle, and Dungourney.

In Carrigtwohill, the Ballintotis girls competed against three teams- Glounthaune, Maria Assumpta Ballyphehane and St. Joseph’s Riverstown. Ballintotis played very well and beat Glounthaune and Riverstown in very impressive fashion. Unfortunately they were beaten by a narrow 2 points by Ballyphehane after being ahead by a goal and a point at half time. Well done to all involved – Yvonne Abernethy, Kate Butler, Lilly Hayes Nally, Roisín Kelly, Meadhbh McCarthy, Faye McGrath, Aisling Harty, Ellen Hayes Nally, Elena Kelleher & Emily O’Callaghan and to coach Ms O'Dwyer.

Race Day – Is Almost Here And Sonia Is Set To Return
Race Day is almost upon with the sixth running of the Ballintotis 4 Mile Road Race just hours away. Dan McCarthy is due to fire the starter’s gun at 8pm on this Thursday evening April 16th and expectations suggest that another very large entry is set to go the start line. Last year’s record entry of 996 runners created a new record for a mid week fixture in Munster with James McCarthy again proving the “king of the road” by the fifth year in a row.

Sonia Returns
This year’s race was given a further boost a few days ago when former World Champion and Olympic medalist Sonia O’Sullivan declared her intention to run in the race, having also taken part 2 years ago. Sonia thoroughly enjoyed her visit to Ballintotis in 2013 and following a return from recent injury she took to the roads again on Sunday last when finishing 3rd lady in the Great Island ‘4’ Mile Race in her native Cobh.

Help Required
The organisation of the race requires involvement from so many different people and once more the local Ballintotis community are stepping up to the task. But we still need one final push in the following areas.

Here are the main areas where the organisers still need assistance.

Stewards Help
We need over 100 stewards to make this race happen. If you know of anyone that would like to help out please contact 086-8778182.

Food
We need as much as possible. As mentioned before this is a community effort and without out its not possible. Cakes/sandwiches/biscuits/quiches whatever it is please contact Jean O Gorman on 086-3319101, or private message her on Facebook. She needs to know numbers urgently.

Entry Desks
Entry Desks will be open from 5pm to 7pm on this Wednesday evening and from 1pm onwards on Thursday. It is important to note that if you have already entered on line, it is necessary to collect your race number and race buff at either of the aforementioned times. Car Parks
Weather permitting there will be three car parks in operation. All motorists are asked to follow the advice of the gardai and stewards when approaching the race route. Car Parks will be signposted well in advance on the approach roads. Please allow plenty of time in advance of the race start and please be patient afterwards. Obviously, before during and after the race there will be restricted access for motorists.

Walk Begins at 6.30pm
The walk will begin at 6.30pm sharp and will go in the opposite direction to the race. Registration for the walk will take place from 5.30pm to 6.15pm. Refreshments for all walkers will be served in the marquee adjacent to the Community Centre immediately after the walk and before the start of the race.

Race Begins At 8pm Sharp
Wheelchair competitor Jerry Forde will begin at 7.45pm with the race beginning at 8pm sharp. All competitors are asked to be at the start line by 7.50pm. There will be graded time zones in operation and ALL competitors are asked to line up in their correct time zone, based on their anticipated finishing time. By doing so, the race will be much more enjoyable and safer for everybody.

Chip Timing
Of course, chip timing has been introduced this year. So there is no need for panic as a timing mat will be in operation at both the start and finish line. Full results will be available quickly afterwards with all race results/category prizes also on line at precisiontiming.net.

Spot Prizes
There will also be spot prizes aplenty – runners/walkers are asked to check of their back of their number to see if they have won a spot prize. Winners can collect their prizes after the race from the stage area.

All Race Enquiries
Finally all race day enquiries should be directed to the designated race line 086 8778182.

Soccer Success For Cathal and Eoin
Away from the race, but still on sporting matters we send our heartiest congratulations to two young Ballintotis soccer players Cathal Murphy and Eoin Quirke (pictured) who were in the news last weekend. The duo who are members of Mogeely FC were part of the club crew selected on the regional East Cork/West Waterford Development League Squad for the DB Sports Coerver Cup and Shield Two Day competition which took place at the U.C.C Grounds in Curraheen. Both players turned in very impressive performances over the course of the weekend event and are proudly displaying the spoils of victory following a thrilling penalty shoot-out success in the Shield Final. Well done guys – Champions League next!!

The countdown is underway to the 2015 Ballintotis 4 Mile Road Race which takes place on Thursday April 16th at 8pm. After last year’s very successful event which attracted 996 runners and was won for the fifth year in a row by James McCarthy of East Cork AC, another big entry is expected this time around.

Chip timing at the start and the finish will be introduced this year and with it comes the opportunity to pre register. Online entry will be open from 9am on Monday March 9th until 12 midnight on Monday April 13th. After that there will still be the opportunity to register at Race HQ in Ballintotis Community Centre. Registration will be available from 5pm to 7pm on the evening prior to the race and again from 1pm onwards on race day Thursday April 16th. Entry fee is €10 (plus administration fee if availing of the convenient on line entry). By clicking on the link above from March 9th and following this link, participants will be able to pre register and also find out the latest pre race news.

This year’s race will again feature a very generous list of prizes with individual prizes to the top 6 men and top 6 women across the line. There are also 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in all categories and a host of spot prizes to be won. Both Castlemartyr Resort and Trabolgan Holiday Centre have again confirmed that they will sponsor the top prizes. Castlemartyr Resort is offering 1 year free membership of their magnificent Leisure Centre for the race winner and 1st female. Trabolgan is providing an extended weekend break for both runners up. Thanks to the generosity of McCarthy & McGrath Auctioneers, Midleton all participants will also receive a souvenir running buff.

The Ballintotis 4 Mile Race is of course held in association with East Cork AC and with the assistance of Ballycotton Running Promotions.

All enquiries to Sean Murphy or John Cashman on 086-8778182

Ballintotis Honours 1964 Churchtown North Team
There is a very special occasion in store on this Sunday evening November 9th in Ballintotis Community Centre. Fifty years on from their historic triumph in the East Cork Junior ‘B’Grade Hurling Championship, team members of the victorious Churchtown North side are being brought together for a reunion function, which begins at 7pm. It will be a night to recall great deeds on the palying pitch but also a chance for old friends to meet again and relive some of the lifespan of a club which has actually come and gone on a number of occasions either side of the 1964 triumph.

The good news is that all are invited to join the victorious team in Sunday’s night of nostalgia. Admission to the function is free with finger food served, music playing and no doubt a few stories being told.

So don’t miss the opportunity to meet a historic hurling team, the Churchtown North hurlers who fifty years ago reigned supreme in the divisional championship which saw 17 teams take part. The locals defeated Watergrasshill in a thrilling semi final, before going on to get the better of Killeagh in the decider. To cap a mighty season they also won the prestigious O’Riordan Cup which was a keenly contested local event, with the Midleton junior side amongst it’s participants.

Join us this Sunday at Ballintotis Community Centre from 7pm to 9pm as we delve a little bit more in some fascinating local folklore.

Best Wishes To Ballintotis NS
Still on a sporting team, but moving on five decade, all our best wishes go with the Ballintotis N.S School team who play Rusheen N.S in the Sciath Na Scol Football Final, tomorrow Thursday November 6th at Pairc Ui Chaoimh – throw in 11am. A huge number of supporters from the area are expected to cheer on the Ballintotis team.

Castlemartyr Win
The Castlemartyr hurling road show is gathering momentum. Last Sunday’s win over Kenmare in Tralee means the locals have a Semi Final date on Cork soil on Sunday week. From a local angle, Ballintotis man Michael O’Neill returned to the starting 15 and made a fine impression at full forward whilst another local James Lawton made his debut at this level.

Yoga In Ballintotis
Yoga classes for Beginners have begun in Ballintotis Community Centre and will take place each Thursday from 8pm to 9pm under the guidance of Mary Kelly. A limited number of places are still available in the current term. All enquiries should be directed to Mary on 086 3241168

Community Christmas Social
The Ballintotis Christmas Social which takes place on Sunday December 7th is now just over four weeks away. Last year’s event was a huge success and this year promises more of the same. Musical entertainment, dancing and delicious seasonal food served all for just 10 euro. The event is being organised by the Community Alert Committee. The function is limited to 100 people – so get your ticket without delay from Veronica O’Farrell, Josie Knowles, Mary Molloy, Kevin Cronin, Paul Kelly or John Cashman. Events get under way at 7pm.

Fit4Life Club
The Ballintotis Fit4Life Club continues to grow with over 110 members now joined the club. The usual Sunday morning runs take place in Glenbower with club night taking place during the winter months in Castlemartyr (to avail of public lighting). Assembly point is at the local School Hall at 7.15pm sharp with all levels of runners welcome to attend. There are also other occasional runs during the week. The best advice is to keep up to date with the club’s excellent facebook page which is superbly run by P.R.O Louise Casey.

On the roads John O Donoghue, Vicky Murphy, Tom O’Neill, Mary Molloy and Mags Duggan were amongst the club members to enjoy fine runs in the recent Lee Fields ‘4’ Mile Race. Last Sunday a number of runners took part in the H.S.E 4 mIle Race in Cork. The next local fixture is a new 5K Race being organised by the Cork B.H.A.A on Sunday week in Little Island.

On the longer term a number of club athletes have also pencilled in the Waterford Half Marathon in early December as a target over the longer distance. Meantime, details of the club’s Christmas party Night are due to be finalised shortly.

Marathon Brothers
Still on running we say heartiest congratulations to Loughaderra natives Brendan and Martin Curtin who last week completed yet another Dublin City Marathon. The guys have been regulars on the Marathon scene in recent years and once again took the 26.2 challenge very much in their stride. Martin, who runs with St Finbarr’s A.C is very much at the serious end of the field, clocking a superb personal best time of 2:54:05 whilst Brendan produced yet another very steady performance coming home in just over 3 and a half hours. The brothers have together ran the Dublin race twice whilst also lining up side by side for the Cork equivalent. In total it’s now seven marathons completed for Martin and six for Brendan, who remarked the mild temperatures and adjusted course made this year’s Dublin a bit tougher.

Cemetery Prayers
November Cemetery Prayers for the dead take place in Churchtown North Cemetery on Sunday next November 9th at 2.30pm in Balloughtera at 3pm on the same day.

Cake Sale
The Parents’ Association of Ballintotis N.S will hold a Cake Sale after 10.00am Mass on this Sunday 9th November in the Community Hall. Parents’ support will be much appreciated on the day.

Congrats to Brian Cott
Finally,a big shout to Ballintotis native Brian Cott who recorded a superb time of 3 hours 14 minutes 54 seconds in Monday’s Dublin City Marathon. This time placed Brian in 766th position in a race that saw over12,500 finishers. For the record Brian averaged 7.27 per mile. – Take a bow Brian!!

28/9/14

Both the Main Hall and Meeting Room are available to hire for regular or once off bookings, with full internet access, catering facilities and public address available making it the ideal venue for clubs, groups, organisations, business seminars, meetings etc. All enquiries should be directed to 086-3319101.

Fit4Life
These are busy times for the Ballintotis Fit4Life Club with stalwarts Tom O’Neill and John O’Donoghue in the limelight last week as they won first and second prizes respectively in their age category at the North Monastery 5K race. - Congrts to the guys on some super running.

On Sunday the Cork to Cobh Race 15 Mile Race and the Ladies Mini Marathon made it a busy day for many club members and supporters. Eilish Downing certainly hit the headlines when finishing in a magnificent 17th position overall in what was a competitive race up front in the Mini Marathon. All reports indicate that some excellent times were also recorded in the 15 Miler.

This coming weekend there is a big Ballintotis contingent heading to Killarney to part take in a major Adventure Race, which includes cycling, canoeing and running. We wish all the best in their endeavours.

Club members should note that assembly point for this week’s run on Thursday is in Castlemartyr (adjacent to the school) at 7.15pm and not at the usual venue in Ballintotis.

Harvest Mass
A large gathering was present at St Colman’s Church on Friday evening last for the annual Harvest Thanksgiving Mass. A great amount of work was put in preparing the Church for the occasion with a huge display of crops, fruit etc on view after one of the finest and longest summers on record.

Altar Servers
Last Friday’s Mass also saw certificate presentations being made to the eight departing altar servers who “retired” from their duties following their recent move to second level school.
Those to receive presentations were Kate McCarthy, Niamh Molloy, Zara Bowles, Aisling Murphy, Daniel Walshe, Sean Duggan, James Butler and Darragh Cashman. The altar servers were complimented on their work over the past two years.

Congratulations Jessica
Congratulations to local lady Jessica O’Shea who was par tof the Cork Senior panel that fashioned a famous comeback to win last Sunday’s All Ireland Final in Croke Park.

Castlemartyr In Action
Castlemartyr junior hurlers return to action on this Saturday evening with plenty of local involvement in the side that takes on Newcestown in the County Quarter Final Replay. The match is timed for 8pm under lights at Pairc Ui Rinn, with the winners due to back into action in the penultimate round on the following weekend against Cloughduv.

Sciath Na Scol
Still on GAA matters, Ballinotis National School continued their excellent form in Sciath Na Scol Football with victory over Inch N.S last week, a result which pushes them towards the latter stages of this year’s competition.

Youth Club
The Castlemartyr/Ballintotis Youth Club is due to meet for the first time following the summer break on Friday week October 10th – 7.30pm in Castlemartyr School Hall. This is Registration Night and parents must be present for registration forms to be accepted. Incidentally it’s appropriate that we say congratulations to Matt and his Maggie who completed a Mountain Marathon in Poland just last weekend.

Fleet Feet Walkers
The Fleet Feet Walking Group enjoyed a hugely successful few months back in Springtime. This is a project being jointly promoted by the HSE and Cork Sports Partnership. Deirdre Carr was the leading lady behind the local venture, which attracted very large gatherings at the Community Centre each week. The good news is that it is on the agenda to return again on Wednesdays with more info’ available locally from Deirdre.

Fit4Life
With the conclusion of the mid week racing scene the Ballintotis Fit4Life Club which has now in excess of 100 members, have reverted back to Thursdays as training night. Assembly time is from 7pm at the Community Centre with training commencing at 7.15pm. New members are welcome to attend.

Members have taken part in a huge number of races during the summer and we say congrat’s to all from the club who competed in all 4 races in the Ballycotton 5 Mile Series. A special word is extended to Michelle Forrest who finished 23rd Lady overall in the Series and is now in proud possession of a coveted Ballycotton ‘Top 30’ tee shirt. Michelle’s aggregate time was 2:32:48. She becomes the first person from the club to achieve the distinction of a Top 30 finish.

There were some great performances on the concluding night in the Series in Ballycotton, with Cyril Garde, Fraser MacGlip and Dominic Barry leading the local men home and Diane Broderick, Kay Murphy and Bridget Ryan amongst the ladies to impress.

Elsewhere Mary O’Mahony took the top prize in her category with a fine run in the recent Inch 5K with club mate Kay Murphy winning the runners up prize in the same category. Meantime Sylvie O’Mahony, Martina O’Brien and Jane O’Connell were amongst the many Ballintotis based runners to enjoy excellent runs in the recent races associated with the conclusion of the 2068 Endurance Challenge in Midleton.

On the triathlon scene, our club members have been extremely busy with many achieving great results in a variety of events. Well done also to the Half Marathon crew who took part in the Dingle race last Saturday, one of the most scenic races in the province.

Trip To Booley House
The Ballintotis Community Alert Group have organised a trip to the Booley House in Ballyduff County Waterford on July 23rd. If you wish to book your seat please call 087 6433948 without delay.

“School’s Out”
It’s holiday time at Ballinjtots NS but whilst teachers and pupils are away, a major project is being undertaken. Work has commenced on the new All Weather Playing Pitch which replaces the existing grass surface. This facility will be a major boost to the children as it will allow constant access regardless of groud conditions. It is hoped to have the project completed by late August.

Meantime it was a very busy end to the school year for all pupils, with tours, sports days, matches and and various special guests ensuring a real summer feel. The Active Week just before the holidays proved a major success as pupils participated in a wide range of sporting and recreational activities. A designated day was also set aside when all pupils gathered at the Church Car Park and walked to school. No doubt this all action week will be repeated again next year.

The end of year school Mass was celebrated by Mons. Goold and featured presentations to the Sixth Class pupils who are leaving Ballintotis after 8 years and are now preparing to move to Secondary School. We send our best wishes to Zara Bowles, Carla Cosgrave, Ellen Harty, Molly Kearney,Cayleigh Fitzgerald, Kate McCarthy, Niamh Molloy, Abbie Moran, Aisling Murphy, Aoife O’Neill,James J. The Ballintotis Fit4Life Club continues to thrive with new faces arriving at the weekly training sessions each Tuesday. This week, there was a change in plan with a group travelling to Carrigtwohill to run the 5K route which will be used for next Wednesday’s Carrigtwohill 5K which is based at Barryscourt Castle. A big representation from the club is expected to take part in this race. The locals were very well represented in the recent Shanagarry 5 Mile Road Race where some outstanding times were clocked up by many of the members.

This week members are also expected to be out in force on Thursday in the Youghal 4 Mile Race which has an 8pm start. The race takes place over a number of laps around the seaside town and this should guarantee a great atmosphere at the venue. After the aforementioned Carrigtwohill 5K on Wednesday, the Ballycotton Series continues in Churchtown South on the following Thursday.

Remember new members are always welcome to join the club with weekly runs on Tuesdays and again on Sunday mornings. With numerous races as well as the late summer club BBQ there is plenty of activities to enjoy - see Ballintotis Fit4Life face book page for further information.

Finally this week we say congratulations to Barra O’ Tuama from Ballintotis and his bride Amy Long who were married at St Colman’s Church in Ballintotis on Friday last. After our 20 minute break we had to play our next match which was against Carrignavar which we knew we had to win. It was a very tough game but at the end score was 1-4 to 1-2 to us. Our next was our last match which we had to win the win the whole competition.

We were against Ballygarvan we found out during the game it wasn’t very challenging . The score was 2-4 to 0-0. When we finished that match we were presented with the winning medals after that we got the bus back to school and told everyone the great news. We were all so happy and excited that we won and everyone was very happy for us.”

The exact time and venue for the Final has yet to be confirmed.

McCarthy makes it 5-in-a-row as
Ballintotis Race Attracts A Record Breaking 996 Runners

New ground was broken on the roads of Cork last week as the Ballintotis 4 Miler created a record for a mid week Road Race in Cork. A massive number of runners – 996 crossed the finish line on a glorious spring evening that brought the crowds out in their droves to take part and watch this great sporting spectacle.

The new high for the race, was not only the biggest ever number of runners recorded at a mid week Road Race in Cork but firmly establishes the race as arguably the biggest 4 Mile Race in Munster. Close on 150 people had walked the 4 Mile Route , beginning at 6.30pm brining the total participation to well in excess of 1,100, the figure representing huge participation from all over the county. Clearly Ballintotis is very much on the map and this event has won the hearts of many as a “must do” springtime activity.

James McCarthy of East Cork AC was again the impressive winner making it 5 wins in a row at the venue and capping his superb night with a course record breaking run of 19.31. Ladysbridge resident Ann Marie Holland who runs with St Finbarr’s AC and is one of the main driving forces behind the forthcoming Kilcredan 5K was the ladies winner, continuing her rich vein of recent form. Both winners receive 1 year free membership of the magnificent Castlemartyr Resort Leisure Centre.

Overall, it was a night to remember for all who enjoyed the wonderful atmosphere at an event that is organised by the industrious local committee in conjunction with East Cork AC and with the help of Ballycotton Running Promotions. Well done to all in the local community who made such a huge effort in so many ways to ensure the success of the race. Without their co-operation it would not be possible to host a sporting occasion of such magnitude.

Sunday morning was busy for many of the club who assembled for their usual 9am run as the countdown begins to gather momentum ahead the big 10 milers in Dungarvan and Ballycotton. Meantime a few more of the local crew opted to take part in the FMC ‘4’ Mile Race in Little Island.

Training takes place again on this Thursday evening. Remember annual membership of Ballintotis Fit4Life Club is now due and can be paid to Diane Broderick at training – it’s 20 euro membership and 1 euro per club night thereafter.

The BHAA Road Races for 2014 began with the aforementioned FMC 4 Miler in Little Island. Just to confirm you can enter these races individually at a cost of 8 euro per event. However if you are a member of a BHAA team, you pay 10 euro at the start and then 5 euro thereafter. A BHAA team is a team representing a company – as Ballintotis Area Community Council is a limited company, last year we entered a Ballintotis CC team (which can have any amount of members) Membership is now due at a cost of 10 euro. Only registered runners can win individual or team prize sin these BHAA races.

Please contact Susan Fitzgerald (team secretary) by if you wish join. The next race is also in Little Island on Sunday week. Please note this is totally optional and not to be confused with the Ballintotis Fit4Life Club membership.

The voting is also open again for the best races of 2013 – please log onto the running in Cork blog and cast your vote.

On a nostalgic note, 2 years ago last Thursday the local running group gathered for the very first time in the Community Centre, 3 months ahead of the Ballintotis ‘4’ of 2012. Less than a year ago, the club was officially formed. It’s worth noting that in the stats produced ahead of the Ballycotton ‘10’ we have 32 participants, the 12th largest club representation.

Christmas Message From Paul Kelly
Chairperson Ballintotis Area Community Council

“2013 has been another eventful year in the life of our Council. Important external and internal works have been completed at the Community Centre during the year. We now have a functional versatile resource to call “our own” which stands as a testament to the wonderful spirit, hard work, generosity and dedication of so many people in the local community who have collectively brought the entire project to near completion at this stage. The centre has facilitated the creation of three new local groups during the year : Ballintotis Community Games, Ballintotis Handball Club and Ballintotis Fit4Life Club. I look forward to additional amenities and groups developing in Ballintotis which will further enhance the lives of all who reside in our community in the years ahead. I would encourage you all to become involved in the various clubs, projects, community events and activities that take place here. My thanks to everybody who volunteered their time and effort to BACC & its sub-committees during the past year. Without your valuable contributions very little could be achieved.

Christmas blessings & peace to you and yours”

BACC AGM
The Annual General Meeting of BACC Ltd will be held on Tuesday 21st January 2014 at 8.00pm in the Community Centre. We urge every household in our community to have a representative in attendance as this is an important forum for views and opinions to be aired and incorporated into community council plans and activities. It is hoped to have a representative from An Gárda Siochána in attendance also to discuss how we might improve overall security in the community following a recent spate of burglaries in both our local area and the broader district.

Community Council Matters
2013 saw the completion of Phase 2 of the development of the Community Centre, this work consisted of the installation of CCTV, Alarm system, security lighting, public address system and an Oak ‘Junckers’ floor which was the final piece of the jig saw and allows the hall to be used for many purposes including dancing, pilates, indoor handball, community games, Zumba, Fit4Life, Sewing Club to mention just a few. A new stage was also purchased to further enhance the facilities provided. BACC have recently received a funding grant of almost €20,000 from SECAD towards the costs of the internal works. We would like to publicly acknowledge the contribution that SECAD have made to the local community through the provision of various funding grants. This assistance is very much appreciated. We would also like to thank SECAD for providing the Tús workers who are an invaluable resource to the community in helping with the upkeep of the Centre and the local area.

Ballintotis Looped Trails (Walking/Cycling)
During the past year a Trails Group which forms part of the Environmental sub-committee of BACC has successfully pursued grant funding to establish a series of looped trails along existing roadways in the locality. Three loops are proposed: (a) The Lake Loop -2km (b) The Castle Loop -3.8km (c) The Woodbine Loop -6.2km (the road race route). All loops will begin & end by the lakeshore at the Church Carpark. Signage and information boards will be provided for trail users with each loop colour coded. A series of waymarkers will be provided along each route indicating distances etc and and warning signs for motorists will also be provided. A new length of pathway will be created through an improved picnic area along the N25 and the path will continue through the grass verge from the lakeside parking area to the church cross junction for the safety of all trail users. The trails project has been approved for development by the Irish Trails Office, Cork Co.Council & the NRA and will be created in collaboration with County Council Roads and Amenities departments. The project has been developed under the guidance of SECAD as part of the Rural Development Programme and has been approved for a SECAD funding grant when work is completed. BACC has also applied for an Amenity Grant from Cork Co. Co. for this project & are awaiting approval presently. Provided adequate grant funding is secured, it is expected that work on the trails will commence in early spring and should be completed swiftly thereafter. Our thanks to Deirdre Carr, Josie Knowles and Paul Kelly for their efforts in progressing the road Trails project to its present stage. We look forward with interest to the completion of this attractive amenity in our area.

Castlemartyr / Ballintotis Youth Club.
The former Castlemartyr Youth Club has recently incorporated Ballintotis into its title reflecting the large number of members who hail from the Ballintotis area. The club meet each Friday night, alternating between the Castlemartyr and Ballintotis hall venues on consecutive weeks. The club are making great use of the recently purchased table tennis tables in the Ballintotis Community centre and have great plans for the year ahead.

Table Tennis Tables
Many thanks to the Ballintotis Community Alert group who kindly sponsored the recent purchase of four table tennis tables for the Community Centre. It is envisaged that these will provide the basis for a table tennis club at the centre in future as well as providing a resource for the Youth Club and indeed some active members of the Over 50’s Tuesday Club.

Road Race
The 2013 Ballintotis 4 was held on the 18th of April. A record 835 runners the largest ever recorded at a mid-week 4 Mile race in Cork completed the course with former World Champion Sonia O’Sullivan the star attraction. For the fourth year in-a-row James McCarthy a Lisgoold native representing East Cork Athletic Club was first past the tape. Rhona Lynch from the Eagle Club in Cork was the first lady home in 2013. Thanks to all who supported the event and helped in any way to make the Ballintotis 4 such a tremendous success. It has evolved into an event that embraces the co-operative spirit of the entire Ballintotis Community. Plans for the 2014 race next April are already well in hand - mark Wednesday April 16th in the diary!.

Incidentally the Tuesday Club has enjoyed a very busy year, including a number of outings and a full programme of organised events at the Community Centre with special guests aplenty. Church Ceremonies
Just a reminder that Mass times in Ballintotis are the same as previous years – 8pm on Christmas Eve and 10am on Christmas Day.

Community Alert Message
The local Community Alert Committee in Ballintotis appeal to people to be extra vigilant over the next few weeks. Following a number of “break ins” in the East Cork area, the committee have asked all residents to report any suspicious activity or any suspicious vehicles to their local Garda Station in Midleton without delay.

Social Night
A great occasion was enjoyed by in the region of 100 people at the Ballintotis Community Centre on Sunday evening last. In what was something of a historic night, the annual Pre Christmas Social organised by the Ballintotis Community Alert Committee was held on home ground for the first time. Food, music, song and dance all made it a night to remember. A sincere word of thanks is extended to the various musicians and singers who enhanced the night with their wonderful talents.

Dancing Nostalgia
The new Community Centre was home to dancing for the first time and this brings into mind some nostalgia recollections from days of old.

During the late 1800’s and early 1900’s Bourkes thatched barn in Ballintotis with an earthen floor was the setting for many a musical night and a packed audience waltzed the hours away to tunes supplied by a gramophone.

Next records of dancing are of a stage in Ballynona old mill in the 1930’s

Then in the late 1950’s - 1961 an open air dance stage was erected outside Hennessy’s farm in Ballinascartha by Jim Hennessy & Con Moran. Dances were held here every Sunday & Wednesday night.

In 1962 the stage was erected at Ballintotis Cross and dances were organised by Mick Guilefoyle. That is the last record of dancing in Ballintotis.

Table Quiz On Thursday
Another enjoyable night with plenty of craic and banter is guaranteed this week as Dominic Knowles and his committee are promoting their annul Table Quiz. It’s on at The Two Mile Inn on this Thursday December 5th at 8.30pm. All proceeds will go to the Community Centre Development Fund. Please support this venture by organising a team of three or four people. As always there are loads of prizes to be won and not just by the teams that finish at the head of affairs.

Fit4Life Club
Ballintotis Fit4Life Club members are looking forward to their Christmas Party Night this weekend, with the function taking place at East Cork Golf Club. On the road scene we say well done to Susan Nagle who ran a personal best time for the 5K distance in the recent RNLI Reindeer Run at Fota and to Jane O’Sullivan who had another fine outing in last Sunday’s Waterford Half Marathon. Next on the running list is the Charity ‘5’ Mile Race in aid of Youghal Hospice which will be held on Sunday next 12 noon. The race HQ is the Marine Bar, which is located between Youghal and Dungravan. On Sunday week the Cork Simon 4 Mile Charity Race takes place in Cork City with the Shanagarry Christmas 5K being held at 12noon on Saturday December 21st.

The girls whoa re coached by teacher Emer O’Dwyer won three of their four matche son Final days at Nemo Rangers G.A. A. Club and in the process collected county runner’s up medals. Well done to all concerned.

Hurling Success
The hurling success for local players continued recently with some more notable achievements. Local members of the victorious Midleton Senior and Under 21 County winning teams brought the cups to Ballintotis NS on Friday last where they received a rousing reception. Earlier that week three local players had been named in the Cork GAA “Team of the Championship” for 2013. Congrats to Patrick O’Mahony, Finbarr O’Mahony and Aidan Ryan.

Meantime last Sunday, the Kiltha Og team captained by James Lawton won the County ‘A’ Grade Hurling League title with victory over Ballyhea. Jack Murphy, Adam McAuliffe, Declan Kelly and Conor Whyte were other local links with the winning team.

All right - time to divert slightly away from the yuletide season. The Ballintotis Fit4Life who are looking forward to sporting the club’s new training wear in the near future and many of them crossed the county bounds last Saturday to take part in the grueling Killarney Adventure Race. A variety of very tough challenges were awaiting but all the crew returned in good spirits with plenty of tales to tell. We say well to done to all who took part and who survived what is very much a stamina testing event.

Away from the lands of adventure, there are a few road races coming up in the not too distant future for those less ambitious amongst us. Martin Is World Champion
Martin Enright hit the headlines on the world stage last week, when winning the Mr Universe Body Building Final in the United States. The Ballinascartha man had put in some tremendous training for the event and got his just rewards when capturing the gold medal in the process defeating the competition favourite, who had 6 major ttiles to his credit. A night of celebration took place on Friday last at O’Neill’s Bar in Midleton to welcome home Martin. Congrats Martin from all in Ballintotis!

Declan Wins All Ireland In Croke Park
Ballintotis was represented in Croke Park on All Ireland Sunday in the shape of Declan Kelly whose superb hurling skills saw him crowned All Ireland Freestyle Hurling Skills Champion 2013. Declan entered the nationwide competition earlier this summer and his you tube video soon captured the imagination of the judging panel. Eventually hurling superstars Ollie Canning and Lar Corbett were called in to narrow the field down to the last 6, from which the 3 top performers were brought to Croke Park on All Ireland Sunday. Declan looked to be one of the coolest guys on the hallowed turf as he demonstrated his skills in front of 82,000 fans. Eventually a massive Cork roar went up when Declan’ name and video flashed up in lights on the giant screen as overall winner. So he left Croke Park as All Ireland champion and the prize of a trip to China with the All Stars to follow. This is a massive success story for Declan, for Kiltha Og and for Ballintotis. Let’s hope he gives us the first interview! Well done again Declan.

Our Fit4Life Running Club were out in force in last week’s Ballycotton ‘5’ Mile Road Race. Including four members who are part of either Midleton A.C or Youghal A.C we had over 20 from our group in action. Many were actually completing the full Race Series and thus received a well deserved plaque to acknowledge their efforts in all 4 venues.

Of those who fall into this category, we say congrat's to Trish Daly (Midleton A.C) who was our leading lady in an impressive 37th overall. Next home was Bridget Ryan 49th overall and Michelle Cott whose superb run last Thursday saw her jump to 56th overall. The ever consistent Tom O’Neill was our leading man followed by club chairman Sean Leahy. Well done again to all our runners.

Next on the agenda is the Leisureworld ‘5’ Mile Race in Ballincollig on this Wednesday followed by the Carrigtwohill 5K on Wednesday next September 4th. This is over a different course than was used for the race in Carrig’ over the same distance last month with all proceeds this time going to the Irish Association for Autism.

Finally, it was interesting to note that after just 6 months in existence, the Ballintotis Fit4Life Club has made it into Cork’s Top 10 in terms of adult membership. Our membership which is close to 100 leaves us in 10th place overall.

A reminder is sent to all taking part that this week’s race has a 7.30pm start. Participants are asked to arrive as early as possible and to follow the advice of stewards in relation to parking.

There are a few races over varying distances yet to take place as evening fixtures this year. These events have been recently added to the busy schedule. Next week’s action sees the Leisureworld 5 Mile being staged in Ballincollig.

Castlemartyr’s Win
Castlemartyr’s win over Carrigtwohill in the recent East Cork Oil Junior ‘A’ Grade hurling Championship has ensured plenty of local involvement in the showpiece occasion of the hurling season. A number of players from the Ballintotis area are involved with the team in what is so far a very impressive campaign. So, plenty to look to forward in autumn of the season, with some big prizes up for grabs

Ballintotis Claim Hurling Win After Cracking Contest

Ballintotis National School maintained their excellent recent record in Sciath Na Scoil Competition when winning the 'Hurling 8 Final' after a cracking contest at Pairc Ui Rinn, which saw Dylan Murphy score two outstanding late points to clinch victory.

The final score line of 3-5 to 3-3 indicates the nature of a contest which produced some fine passages of hurling and excellent play by both teams. On a blustery day, wind advantage was always going to be a key factor and Ballintotis had to battle back from a 5 points interval deficit to fashion a merited victory in the second half with the aid of the wind.

The game began at a lively pace as both teams showed their quality, sharing four points. A super reaction save by Ballintotis goalkeeper Eoin Cashman denied Ballynoe their opening goal, but their first green flag arrived in the fifth minute courtesy of Thomas O’Donnell. Unfortunately for Ballintotis two more Ballynoe goals followed before the break to help establish that five points advantage.

Meantime, at the other end of the field Ballintotis produced plenty of scoring chances as regular goal getters Liam Franklin and Cleeva Motherway in the inside forward line tried their utmost to find the target. When their only goal of the half arrived it was from the stick of inspiring team captain Michael Kelly who ghosted into the full forward line, following some fine approach play on the right wing. It meant the sides changed ends with Ballynoe 3-2 to 1-3 ahead.

Team boss Jerry Smyth and right hand man Sean Murphy had Ballintotis fired up for a big second half performance. Although they shot 3 wides soon after the resumption, the signs were there that their constant pressure might eventually pay dividends. Driven on by their excellent half back duo of David Lawton and Conor Whyte and visibly lifted by Eoin Mitchell’s excellence at midfield the scores eventually flowed. Ciara Barry’s splendidly taken goal began the comeback and although she had to retire through injury soon after, substitute Philip Kelleher also proved very effective.

With Ballynoe keeping their noses in front through a single second half point, as time ticked on it appeared as if another Ballintotis goal would be required to swing the match. Appropriately it came courtesy of the silken skills of Michael Kelly who made the most of his opportunity following another weaving run.

Level pegging at this point (3-3 each) and certainly ‘heart in the mouth’ stuff by both sets of vociferous fans. With the ever consistent Michael Cosgrave producing another big defensive display ably assisted by newcomer Jack Bowles, Ballintotis were in no mood to concede. Enter Dylan Murphy at the other end, the towering half forward who has had a great campaign held his nerve twice in quick succession to win the day for Ballintotis.

A famous win against a gallant Ballynoe outfit and a fitting finale for the entire Ballintotis squad and coaches who put a huge effort into both this season’s hurling and football campaigns.

Team – Eoin Cashman, Jack Bowles, Michael Cosgrave, David Lawton, Conor Whyte, Michael Kelly, Eoin Mitchell, Ciara Barry, Dylan Murphy, Cleeva Motherway and Liam Franklin.Sub used: Philip Kelleher for Ciara Barry (injured 2nd half)Subs – Shane O’Brien, Eoin Hennessy, Nicholas Kelleher, Ciaran Newlands, Jack Knowles, Luke Hayes Nally, Carrie McEvoy and Megan Murphy.

The Life of St. Paul
On Sunday 24th May a pageant depicting  - the major events  of St. Paul's life was re-enacted at  Ballintotis Church grounds.  The natural scenic setting of the Church and Lough Aderra lake enhanced this unique presentation.  The idyllic weather conditions afforded the cast of  56, Midleton Brass & Reed Band, Ballintotis Church Choir, Midleton Parish Choir, IMP Choir, St. Mary's High School Choir, St. Briget's N.S. Choir, Ballintotis N.S. and a large congregation  the ultimate enjoyment.

The event marked the current year of dedication to St. Paul and depicted such scenes as - the introduction of Paul as a student of Gamaliel in Jerusalem, - Stephens's Trial before the Jeruslem Sanhedrin, - Paul's remarkable conversion on the road to Damascus, his baptism by Ananias on the lakeshore, -  Paul's preaching in Jerusalem in the company of Barnabas, and the dramatic curing of the cripple in Lystra, - the Proclamation of the Council of Jerusalem in 50 A.D., Paul's subsequent missionary journey by boat (on Loughaderra lake) to spread the good news, - ending with his letter to Timothy while  a prisoner in Rome.

The colourful and exotic costumes reflected the era, created an atmosphere, defined character  and enhanced the performance. The musical arrangements and the narrator's deliverance delicately balanced the linkage and continuity.

The rehearsals of a dedicated and committed cast, the amplification and sound effects by Austin Brosnan and the direction, guidance and finesse of Séan Aherne guaranteed a successful and truly magnificent and  entertaining performance.

Pictured during a break in rehearsals are The Elders:
Vincent McCarthy, Ger Cott, Flan O'Meara and Dominic Knowles

Garda Youth Awards
Fergal Duffy, Stumphill was a worthy winner of a Garda Youth Award at a reception in the Midleton Park Hotel on 8/12/2008 last. Fergal was nominated by Ballintotis Community Council for his courage and determination in overcoming physical disability, his outstanding sporting success and for his contribution the community in his sports coaching and helping others with disabilities. There were nine other winners from as far apart as Mallow, Fermoy and Cobh. One of those was a group of young people from the Midleton-based East Cork Friends of the Mentally handicapped who selflessly give of their time to aid the running of the summer school in Midleton every year. John Barker accepted the award on behalf of the group. See photos of the awards ceremony on this site. The awards ceremony was temporarily halted by the surprise arrival of a special guest, actor Paschal Scott (aka Sergeant Dick O'Toole from Killinascully).

Rural Transport
The rural transport scheme came into operation in Ballintotis this recently, thanks principally to the great efforts of some of our community activists along with the governing body from ECAD.

The bus made it’s inaugural journey from Churchtown South, with pick ups on the way to Ballintotis en route to Midleton town. The scheme is in operation already in many parts of the country and nearby in the Avondhu area which covers other parts of East Cork it has proved a great success.

Well Done Jack
Congratulations to Jack Knowles who was the winning captain of the Kiltha Og Under 8 team that recently won the Russell Rovers Under 8 hurling Blitz in Shanagarry.  Jack has been in great form all season scoring a number of crucial goals from his corner forward berth.  He was joined on the winning team by other locals Stephen Forde, Liam Rabbittee, Philip Kelleher, Nicholas Kelleher and Darragh Cashman. (See below for more on this story)

Outstanding Win In Russell Rovers Under 8 Blitz

Kiltha Og players in celebratory mood following their win in the Russell Rovers Under 8 hurling blitz on Saturday last in Shanagarry.

Congratulations are extended to all involved in Kiltha Og’s Under 8 success in last weekend’s Russell Rovers GAA Blitz.  This superbly well organised event featured teams from Aghada, Cloyne, Erin’s Own, Fr O’Neill’s, hosts Russell Rovers and eventual winners Kiltha Og.

Each team played one other in a round robin competition which a saw a high standard of play produced by all teams. In total 39 nine goals were scored during the course of a hectic few hours of action, co-ordinated superbly by the industrious Russell Rovers club.

Kiltha Og began with a stiff test against a determined Cloyne side and only got on top late on when top marksman Joseph Stack scored an excellent goal.  Another soon followed before Jack Knowles’ opportunism ensured the win.

Next up it was Fr O’Neill’s where again our tight defence, superbly marshalled by new full back Dylan Healy and pivot Darragh Moran, ensured the opposition had to work hard for scores.  Despite O’Neill’s registering a superb long range point, our forwards with Philip Kelleher in inspirational form tallied with the vital scores to make it two wins in a row.

 - A good start against Russell Rovers helped build up a half time advantage.  Here Joseph Stack again began the scoring before Nicholas Kelleher struck from close range for a second goal.  Cormac Griffin and Shane O’Riordan had again to display their outstanding work rate at midfield as Rovers came back strongly in the second period.  A smashing goal from a close range free closed the gap but crucial defensive interventions from Darragh Cashman,  ultra reliable goalkeeper Shane Dunleavey and the outstanding Darragh Moran ensured Kiltha Og maintained their one hundred per cent record.

Scores were very scarce early in match four against Aghada with both teams very evenly matched.  Another Joseph Stack goal gave the Kiltha Og side a slender interval lead, whilst Robert Cahill and Ronan Hayes who both worked extremely hard also came close to raising green flags from close range.  Good defensive blocks by Odhrann Cantwell, Dion Twomey and Liam Rabbittee helped Kiltha Og maintain their advantage in a closely contested second period which was illuminated by a fantastic point from the stick of Darragh Moran.

In the final match against Erin’s Own, Kiltha Og needed to maintain their winning sequence to ensure out right victory.  Peter Nestor, Niall Morgan and Stephen Forde  played impressively at various points of this concluding fixture which saw again saw the outstanding Joseph Stack play a staring role in building up a winning advantage.  With Darragh Moran supreme at centre back, Shane O’Riordan and Cormac Griffin continuing their high work rate Kiltha Og went on to complete a five game winning sequence and thereby completed a famous win for this very dedicated group of players.

Afterwards Jack Knowles was the lucky player to be called out of the draw to be captain for the day.  The proud Ballintotis native lifted the cup to great scenes of delight amongst the Kiltha Og supporters and players.  All the Kiltha Og players will now have the opportunity to look after the cup for a few weeks during the next year.

In the meantime, it’s back to training on this Friday at Castlemartyr GAA Pitch between 6pm and 7pm.
