Ballintotis 4-Mile Race - 2014

McCarthy Makes It 5 In A Row As
Ballintotis Race Attracts A Record Breaking 996 Runners

by John Cashman

New ground was broken on the roads of Cork last week as the Ballintotis 4 Miler created a record for a mid week Road Race in Cork. A massive number of runners – 996 crossed the finish line on a glorious spring evening that brought the crowds out in their droves to take part and watch this great sporting spectacle.

The new high for the race, was not only the biggest ever number of runners recorded at a mid week Road Race in Cork but firmly establishes the race as arguably the biggest 4 Mile Race in Munster. Close on 150 people had walked the 4 Mile Route , beginning at 6.30pm brining the total participation to well in excess of 1,100, the figure representing huge participation from all over the county. Clearly Ballintotis is very much on the map and this event has won the hearts of many as a “must do” springtime activity.

James McCarthy of East Cork AC was again the impressive winner making it 5 wins in a row at the venue and capping his superb night with a course record breaking run of 19.31. Ladysbridge resident Ann Marie Holland who runs with St Finbarr’s AC and is one of the main driving forces behind the forthcoming Kilcredan 5K was the ladies winner, continuing her rich vein of recent form. Both winners receive 1 year free membership of the magnificent Castlemartyr Resort Leisure Centre.

Overall, it was a night to remember for all who enjoyed the wonderful atmosphere at an event that is organised by the industrious local committee in conjunction with East Cork AC and with the help of Ballycotton Running Promotions. Well done to all in the local community who made such a huge effort in so many ways to ensure the success of the race. Without their co-operation it would not be possible to host a sporting occasion of such magnitude.
